In 1968, my high school psychology class text --and my teacher -- idolized former insane asylum patient Clifford W. Beers, for his courage and his singular insight into his own mental health, in a time when Manic Depression was usually a life sentence to Bedlam or Belleview. So much impressed was I, that, 50 years on, I remembered his name and just HAD to buy this book! (His contemporary "expert" in the field, Sigmund Freud, failed to be of any use for profoundly ill mental patients, with bi-polar and schizophenia especially). Beers suffered from Manic Depression, and was the first patient to help the psychiatric community understand and give aid and comfort, rather than cruelty, to the mentally ill. I suppose if Beers had been Austrian, then Freud might have figured something out, but Beers was a Yale man living in New York, so the famous psychologist and philosopher William James got to know him first; he wrote the preface to this book, in high praise of Beers, and many might feel the preface alone is worth tthe purchase price.Beers' style is unique; he was financier by trade, not a professional writer, but his style is compelling and well composed, if a bit old-fashioned. Good for him to have eschewed a ghost writer for his own "voice". He succeeded as no one ever had in moving the United States out of the Middle Ages in the field of mental health, and therefore he gives our time a vital historic document and an excellent auto-biography.

Everyone should read this book at some time or other. I read it for my social work class, but I’m glad I did because it gives great insight into the early struggles of life at a mental institution. Also, it was fascinating to read first hand the struggles of someone who experienced and returned from a mental breakdown!
Although fascinating, it was at times a difficult book to read - simply because it highlights how little our methods of treatment for any mental disease have changed in over 100 years. I found it a book that reminded me to keep thinking about these issues.Having now read the book, I agree with many of the other reviewers whose opinions I took into account before starting the book - so thank you to them as well.
This is such an inspiring autobiography that depicts Clifford W. Beers' life inside a mental institution. His narrative rings loud and clear for those who have been confined in a sanitarium seeking love, care, empathy and understanding from people managing the institution. Beers' autobiography seeks questions on humane treatment of those who have been confined, unloved and forgotten by their families, and wanting to be heard through the process of interaction. A must for the helping professionals like psychologist, counselor, therapist, social worker and others! Brilliant and a very moving book indeed!
This is a book from the past, but as important today as it was then. I had doubts as to it's relevance to modern times, but they were of no consequence in the end. A book of courage and honesty in the telling of mental illness, it's consequences on both patient and family. It was a free download, but I downloaded because of the subject, and was glad I did.
Something weird happened here. Be very careful when purchasing this item! This book is indeed "A Mind That Found Itself" by Clifford Whittingham Beers, one man's autobiographical account of what it's like to suffer with mental illness and institutionalization. So whats the problem? The covers, back and front, are the covers for an anthology of classic literature!! I have included a screenshot capture of the back cover of the book. Again, for clarification purposes the contents of the book is Beers' account, but the book cover must be for some other book about classic literature. This is disappointing because I bought the book as a gift to someone who had already read a digital edition of Beers' book while enrolled in college and wanted a paper copy for her library. It wouldn't bother me if I was the owner because I'm not overly particular, but when the book was a gift to someone else it's, well...disappointing. Don't know what happened; must have been a publisher's error. By the way, the publisher is CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. Okay, I'm done.
For anyone interested in mental health issues, whether through family, friends, studies or work, this is a very well written book from one who has been on both sides and come through amazingly well. I am ever so grateful C. W. Beers wrote this - and was able to get it published. It is eye opening and may be difficult for some to read in some places. But quite accurate to the time. I only gave it 4 stars because of this. Though in many countries, the mental health care may not even be to this level, here in the USA, we have tried to improve our understanding and treatment of diseases that affect one's conscious state.
I stumbled upon this book title in a "history of counseling" handout. On a whim I decided to search for the title "just to see" and there it was as a free kindle book so I snagged it up and thought I'd read the first page or two before getting back to my course studies. Needless to say, my homework was set aside until I finished the book several hours later! As a Clinical Mental Health counseling student I could not put this book down! It is insightful, enlightening, inspirational, educational, and riddled with hints of theories not put into practice until years later... A must read for anyone personally dealing with mental illness, their friends/families, and absolutely those in the helping professions. So glad I was given the privilege to read this autobiography and so thankful to Beers for completing the task!
